Hayagreeva Maddi

Hayagreeva Maddi is a traditional Udupi recipe which is offered to Lord Hayagreeva as "naivedyam" or "prasadham" (offering). It is delicious and healthy because its primary ingredients are channa dal and jaggery. It's quite similar to the filling used for purina poli except for the texture. Here, the channa dal is not mashed.

1 cup Bengal gram dal
1 cup Jaggery
2 tbsp Ghee
¼ cup Coconut grated 
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
Raisins – 10
Cashewnuts - 10
Almonds -10

Method of preparation

1) Cook  the Bengal gram dal in a pressure cooker till it is 3/4th done.  

2) Heat jaggery in a pan and cook till it boils and bubbles are formed.  

3) Add the Bengal gram dal to this mixture and mix well till it forms a smooth consistency.

4)  Add cardamom powder, ghee and coconut at this stage and mix well.  

5) Fry the dry fruits in ghee and add at the end for garnish.
